Book Review: The Secret Keeper, Beverly Lewis

Cover Art
ISBN 9780764209802
From The Back:

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania--the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began--with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

Jennifer Burns shocks her family and friends when she bids farewell to her modern life in favor of the Old Order Amish world, settling in with Samuel and Rebecca Lapp.

The people of Hickory Hollow are curious about the beautiful young seeker among them--one handsome Amishman in particular--and Jenny faces many challenges in the Proving time the brethren set for her...challenges of the heart, as well as the spirit.

My Reflections:

From the  author, Beverly Lewis who has made the Amish culture popular! This book, number four in the Home to Hickory Hollow series, and is sure to delight.

This book was so much more than just a good contemporary fiction. It included a history lesson,  Amish customs and a glimpse into a day in the life of an Amish-woman. To this Amish reading junkie,  I was a kid in a candy store!

Because the story revolves around a seeker (Jennifer Burns) who's life's desire is to become all things Amish, the reader is given a wonderful spy glass into what it truly means to be Amish and the struggles and joys that come along with the "Simple life". The take was so vastly different from the books I have read so far, I found my self to be quite intrigued. The main character is trying to become Amish not trying to leave the Old Order, what a nice change in story line!

Through Lewis's  talented writing, Jennifer learns that being Amish is not a perfect solution to the worlds troubles, that facing your past, dealing with your problems and giving them to God is the only true way to experience peace and joy.

I think my favorite part of this book was about halfway in, when Jennifer falls for the Amishman, That's when the story really blossomed for me, who doesn't love a complicated romance? Can their love ever become a reality?

I was also highly curious about the aspects of her "proving time" Not having read a book that mentions this time of proving ones self as set apart, devoted and submissive to their faith and community of believers. I found this extremely interesting.

I always imagined it would be so nice to be Amish, and live "simple"... but I absolutely love my modern conveniences waaay too much! I guess giving up TV, gardening and canning will have to be as Amish as this county girl's going to get.

In closing, this book was entertaining and educational all at once, and I think if you are a Amish fan like myself you will certainly enjoy reading this novel. Well done Beverly Lewis!

Book review: A Home for My Heart

Cover Art

  From the Back:

A sweet story of hope and love set against the poignant backdrop of a 1910 orphanage

Sadie Sillsby works as the assistant to the matron at the Raystown Home for Orphan and Friendless Children, pouring all her energy into caring for the boys and girls who live there and dreaming of the day she'll marry her beau, Blaine, and have children of her own. But when the matron surprises everyone by announcing her own engagement, Sadie is suddenly next in line for the esteemed job of running the orphanage.

There's one glitch. The matron cannot be married. She must focus her attention on the financial, legal, and logistical matters of the Home. Sadie's heart is torn. Should she give up her plans for a life with Blaine in order to continue serving these children who have no one else? Does she, a young woman who was once an orphan herself, have what it takes to succeed in such a challenging career? And when the future of the Home begins to look bleak, can Sadie turn things around before the place is forced to close forever?

 My Reflections:

This book was such a touching and sweet story. The plight of orphans hits close to my heart, as my mom was an orphan and had such a hard life because of the pain and hurt she has carried around her whole life.

This book is well written, the issues deep and faith filled. The plot is somewhat simple and a tad predictable, but not in a negative way by any means. I quite enjoyed the relaxed pace the story progressed at and didn't find that it lost my attention at any point.

Saidie Sillsby's character is well developed and true to life. The issues she deals with are typical of orphans and the grace we see her character experience are completely uplifting and make the story a real joy to read.

Blaine her intended, is also a well rounded character, although we don't really get to know him well, he feels somewhat distant in the entirety of the novel. The end of the story kind of brought it all together for me. I would love to see a sequel to this novel about Blaine's Brother Carter. His plight would make an interesting novel.

All in all I quite enjoyed reading about the Raystown Home for Orphans and Friendless Children, it made me want to revisit my desire to foster children in need of some love and stability.
I would recommend this Historical fiction to anyone who wants a heart tugging easy read, the faith elements in this book are clear, and uplifting.

Book Review: A Bride For Keeps

Cover Art

From The Back:

Everett Cline will never humiliate himself by seeking a mail-order bride. Not again. He's already been jilted by three mail-order brides and figures a wife just isn't in his future. However, a well-meaning neighbor hasn't given up on seeing him settled, so she goes behind his back to bring yet another woman to town for him.

Julia Lockwood has never been anything more than a pretty pawn for her father or a business acquisition for her former fiance. A mail-order marriage in faraway Kansas is a last resort, but she'll do anything to leave her life in Massachusetts and the heartbreak she's experienced there.

Although Everett doesn't see how a beautiful, cultured woman like Julia could be happy sharing his simple life, he could really use a helpmate on his homestead. Determined to prove she's more than just a pretty face, Julia agrees to a marriage in name only. Faced with the harsh realities of life on the prairie and hesitant to explore the tentative feelings growing between them, can Everett and Julia ever let each other in long enough to fall in love?

My Reflections:

I received three books packaged in one order this week and was instantly drawn to the beautiful cover of this book, then to the intriguing story line. Upon cracking the cover of this novel I was transported to Kansas in 1876, my heart still lingers there....

This book held me captive, and stole my heart in the process.
It is an endearing story about a man and a woman both harboring pain from the past. Everett Cline a tender, honorable character who has been rejected by three mail order brides, figures he is destined to be a bachelor. His neighbor and friend, Rachel has an entirely different plan for him.

Julia Lockwood is desperate to start new. Her past haunts her and she has sunk to the all time low of answering an ad for a mail order bride. Will her new husband be able to abide by her stipulations?
Her character is one filled with mistrust and longing all at the same time. She yearns for love but can't tolerate the realities of a full marriage arrangement.

In this novel you are given a glimpse into the three other mail order brides stories, which I loved. I can't wait for a sequel on Helga (one of the mail order brides that marries the neighbor)
This really tied the story together for me and I found myself wanting more, so I will be keeping my eyes open for sequels to this book.

In summary, I would definitively recommended this book to anyone wanting a fast paced, heart tendering book that will stick with you. I am keeping this book in my library, it is that good. Wonderful work Melissa Jagears, can't wait to read more!

Book Review: Unforeseeable

Cover Art
 ISBN# 978 0 7642 0929 1

From the Back:

Callie Hoffman has a good life in Kingdom, Kansas. She's engaged to Levi Housler, the new pastor of Kingdom Mennonite Church, and she spends her days working with Lizzie Housler, her friend and soon-to-be sister-in-law, at the town cafe.

When a body is discovered on the road outside Kingdom and the deceased turns out to be the victim of a serial killer, the new county sheriff begins questioning Kingdom residents. Unsettled at the prospect of a killer in Kingdom, Callie is desperate to find answers for herself, especially when her own fiance seems to know more about the murder than he's telling.

As the town battles an entirely unforeseen danger and Callie's very life is threatened, the stakes are as high as they've ever been and the people of Kingdom must learn anew to put their trust in God alone.

My Reflections:

Nancy Mehl has done it again, with this third installment of her Road to Kingdom series.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this suspense murder mystery, story line.

In this novel Callie Hoffman and Levi are engaged to be married, but before they actually tie the knot they both have issues they need to face. One of those issues being a serial killer on the loose in their peaceful little Mennonite town of Kingdom.

Mehl masterfully blends the two worlds of Christian fiction and suspense together to immerse the reader in complete and utter harmony. The writing and story line are complex and seamlessly merge the characters from previous books. I enjoyed the aspect of deepening my understanding of the characters and of course all the mystery surrounding the murdered women.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about the Kingdom series is the natural way Mehl creates her characters to wear flesh, and that is something her readers can relate to on a very personal level. Her writing is deep and any reader can glean personal insights through her dynamic writing capabilities.

I would think you could read this book as a stand alone, but honestly why would you? It would be beneficial to the reader to start on book one and work your way up to this third book, as it relies heavily on the knowledge of previous events.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to be lost in a great murder mystery!
